Cycle Trail Itinerary
Opua Motel is located 1 km from the eastern entry of the Twin Coast Cycle Trail (Pou Herenga Tai). We can accommodate up to 12 people and offer a group rate for 4 or more people. All units have kitchens and bathrooms. There is secure bike storage (a lockup garage) and overnight car parking at $15 a night (all subject to availability).
Day 1 - Arrive at Opua Motel
- Dinner at Opua Cruising Club
Day 2 - Cycle Opua to Kaikohe (44km)
- Coffee stop in Kawakawa, lunch (BYO) on trail
- Arrive in Kaikohe
- Stay at Mid Northern Motor Inn
- Turn left off trail on Broadway & go back towards town, not far
- Motel has a shared kitchen for guests
- Dinner at RSA next door
- Or at Left Bank

Day 3 - Cycle Kaikohe to Horeke (45km)
- Coffee stop in Okaihau, lunch (BYO) on trail beside the river
- Arrive in Horeke
- Stay at one of:
- Riverhead BnB - historic homestead with views over the harbour
- Horeke Hotel - perched on the edge of the Hokianga Harbour, watch the sun set
- Dinner at hotel by arrangement with Pete, phone 09 401 9133
Side Excursions
- Cycle to the historic Mangungu Mission House (3km), and/or
- Horeke Hotel history tour with Pete, phone 09 401 9133, and/or
- Visit Wairere Boulders, a local geological marvel. Phone for a pickup 09 401 9935.
- Boat ride with Ranui on the Hokianga.
Day 4 - Return to Opua at your leisure
- Or shuttle pickup by arrangement
- Return to Opua Motel to collect car, approximately 1 hour trip

Cycle Trail Highlights
The best of the trail, self-drive from your base in Opua. Choose any highlight or do them all.
- Cycle Opua to Kawakawa and return (22km)
- Drive to Kaikohe (45 min), cycle Kaikohe to Okaihau and return (28km)
- Drive to Okaihau (30 min), cycle Okaihau to Utakura River picnic area and return (24km - note that you will have to come back up the switchback)
- Drive to Horeke (1 hr)
- Cycle along the broadwalk and return (2.5km)
- Cycle Horeke to Mangungu Mission and return (5km)
- See above excursions to do from Horeke, including watching the sunset on the Hokianga
